Indigenous Career Development Network

The Network is made up of Indigenous people throughout WA who have a genuine interest in improving education, training and employment services for Indigenous people. It provides a unique opportunity to enhance career development partnerships and develop a stronger support mechanism to assist Indigenous people in making informed life, work, learning and career choices.

It comprises representatives from various government agencies and community based organisations including the Job Network, Ministry of Justice, Department of Education and Training, Department of Conservation and Land Management, Department for Community Development, Kulijak and Urban Services, TAFEWA and various schools and universities.

Aim

It facilitates information, knowledge and ideas being exchanged. We have different departments or organisations showcase their services at the meetings and we invite guest speakers to provide information to the Network on a range of products and services for indigenous people. It also provides an opportunity to mentor and encourage each other to continue striving to better our service delivery to Indigenous people.

Everyone who attends is offered the opportunity to become part of a mailing and contact list which is kept on database and information is then filtered through the network. This information may range from job opportunities, career development initiatives, success stories, government announcements, meetings, education and training resources to labour market reports.

The feedback and comments received from the forums have all been very positive and expressed that the Indigenous network was long overdue. Terry Cornwall from CALM’s Heritage Unit said, “It was great to meet other Aboriginal people who are committed to assisting our people”.

Wendy Smith from Industry and Community Planning at DET voiced her commitment to the Network, “Let’s do everything in our power to make this work”.

Meetings are held every 3 months. For further information please contact Helen Slater on (08) 9264 4425 or Helen.slater2@det.wa.edu.au.
